The Pioneer Tunnel operated from 1911 to 1931. It was a coal mine owned by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, the mine was dug straight into the mountain and extended thousands of feet underground. The mine closed in 1931. Today they offer coal mine tours & mountainside rides on a steam train plus a playground & snack bar.
The Chattanooga Choo Choo was a name given by a newspaper reporter after hearing the steam locomotive huffing and puffing. Although the Chattanooga’s Terminal Station was significant in its role of the train era with its “Track 29”, little was known about the first Chattanooga Choo Choo until Glenn Miller and his orchestra made a song in 1941 about it which became very popular. Still in existence is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Historic Hotel, considered one of the city's first historic preservation projects. The Choo Choo Hotel is still going strong, providing travelers with beautiful and comfortable accommodations in unique Pullman Train Cars and traditional hotel rooms. The property also features two restaurants and several bars, two music venues, a comedy club, a distillery plus many different stores. The original train ran on Track 29 and traveled from Pennsylvania Station in New York City through Baltimore, North and South Carolina, and finished the trip at Terminal Station in Chattanooga, TN.
